North of the Border
![]() Hubbell Native American Crafts Auction Hopi Mesa, Navajo Nation, Canyon de Chelly May 5-10 2010 This exciting five day tour is co-promoted with the Mission Mill Museum in Salem Oregon and the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenberg, Az. Led by Dr. Peter Booth, the current director at the Mission Mill Museum and former Director of the DCWM. This tour focuses on the weaving traditions of the Hopi and Navajo cultures.
We begin in Phoenix at the Heard Museum. Along with the fine Heard docent, Peter will explain the progression of the art of weaving from a utalitarianism purpose to the fine art industry we're witnessing today. We finish the day in Flagstaff after a spectacular trip through Oak Creek Canyon and dinner at the Junipine Restaurant.
Day two: Today we start be visiting R.B. Burnhams' Trading Post as well as a weaving demonstration at Toadlena Trading post near Two Grey Hills. We'll visit the Navajo Council Chambers in Window Rock. We end the day at the historic El Rancho Hotel in Gallup,NM.
Day three: Enjoy a tour of Canyon de Chelly. We take all terrain vehicles to White House Ruin with our navajo Driver/guide. In the late afternoon we offer a trip out along the north rim as Peter tells stories of the intense interaction between the U.S. Military forces and the resilient Navajo people. Overnight at the Holiday Inn/Chinle.
Day four: This morning we'll drive along the south rim of Canyon de Chelly for breakfast al fresco. We then travel to Ganado to experience the Hubbell Native American Arts and Crafts Auction. Many artistic treasures including fine rugs, silver jewelry and katchinas can be had for a very reasonable prices. And the auction itself is great fun for those purchasing and those who are not. We then travel through Keems Canyon to Hopi Mesa and a tour of Walpi. We conclude the fantastic day with an overnight at the Hopi Cultural Center.
Day five: Today we'll visit the Trading Post of Joe and Janice Day at Tsakurshovi. After awards we'll visit another village on Hopi Mesa I. We travel to Winslow in the afternoon for our final evening at the La Posada Hotel. Our farewell dinner is at the spectacular Turquoise Room.
Day six: Today we make our way to Wickenburg for a visit to the DCWM and bid farewell to our fellow travellers from Wickenburg. We then drive to Phoenix to bring the Oregon guests to the airport before returning to Tucson. Welcome Home.
All along the way Peter will educate and challenge your knowledge of the Navajo and Hopi Cultures. Enjoy interesting cultural experiences and wonderful meals. It's a incredible tour that you won't want to miss.
May 5-10, 2010 $1450 per person. Add an additional $300 if you'll be rooming alone.
